Stellarium Gornergrat

The Stellarium Gornergrat is a Swiss observatory devoted to outreach and pedagogy.

The Gornergrat is one of the best locations for astronomical observations in the whole of Central Europe. At over 3,100 meters (10’171 ft) above sea level, international research was carried out here from the late 1960s until 2010. Since then, due to the ever-increasing demands of science on the location of the telescopes, professional research has moved to places with more than 300 usable nights per year.

Nevertheless, the Universities of Bern and Geneva did not want to give up this excellent location and decided to set up an educational project instead. Together with their partners, the Burgergemeinde Zermatt and the foundation High Alpine Research Stations Jungfraujoch & Gornergrat, Switzerland’s first educational telescope was set up in the south dome in order to bring astronomy into the classrooms.

The Stellarium Gornergrat opens its doors to schools

The Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern has teamed up with partners to build and set up a facility on the Gornergrat, whose telescopes and instruments are primarily available for educational purposes and to the public. This gives schools access to professional equipment at what is probably the best star-gazing location in Switzerland.
