Susanne Wampfler named as CSH Deputy Director

Former CSH Fellow and astrochemist Prof. Dr. Susanne Wampfler has been named as the CSH Deputy Director effective 1st January 2021. She is the holder of a Swiss National Science Foundation Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship.

Ambizione Fellowship

Elspeth Lee has won an Ambizione Fellowship (2020), which will be hosted at the CSH. Dr. Lee comes to the CSH from the University of Oxford.

"Physik am Freitag": Nobel Prize Winners and Jupiter's Moons

With “Physik am Freitag,” the University of Bern offers a series of lectures in which current topics from the world of physics are presented to a broad audience. In the current edition, which begins on Friday, January 24, 2020, the lectures will focus on topics such as Nobel Prize winners, space missions, and plastic waste in the ocean.

Honorary Professorship at University of Warwick

Prof. Dr. Kevin Heng has been appointed a Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick with an initial appointment from 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2022. The CSH will seek to collaborate closely with its Centre for Exoplanets & Habitability.

Hans Sigrist Symposium 2019: Fascinating Exoplanet Science

The Hans Sigrist Symposium, which is taking place on Friday, December 6, 2019, is to address the topic of exoplanet research – and will therefore revolve around the question of whether Earth-like planets orbit other suns in the universe. The occasion coincides with the presentation of the prestigious Prize of the Hans Sigrist Foundation, which is based at the University of Bern, to the Dutch Astronomer, Prof. Dr. Ignas Snellen. The keynote speech by Ignas Snellen is entitled "The Search for Extraterrestrial Life".

The Red Planet in Pictures: 50 Years of Mars Research

On November 19, 2019, French space researcher Nicolas Mangold will give a lecture on Mars research. Nicolas Mangold is Director of Research at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in Nantes and Deputy Director of the Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique. The public event is organized by the Center for Space and Habitability CSH at the University of Bern in collaboration with the French Embassy. Admission is free, and the lecture will be held in French.

Bern in Space – celebrating 50 years since the moon landing

At the end of June, the University of Bern is holding a diverse science festival to mark the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing: a multimedia show on Bundesplatz will display milestones in Bernese space exploration, high-ranking representatives from the big space agencies will discuss the future of space exploration, there will be a chance to look up at the night sky from the Grosse Schanze – and rockets will be built.

50 Years since the Moon Landing – the University of Bern visits the BEA

Kick-off to the celebrations marking 50 years since the moon landing: from April 26 to May 5, 2019, the University of Bern, together with the Swiss Museum of Transport and the Zurich Planetarium, will be taking visitors to the BEA on a journey through space. On May 1, 2019, Swiss Post will also present its special stamp and the Swiss Federal Mint will present its commemorative coin as part of the University of Bern's special exhibition at BEA.
