Development of Optical Telescopes in the last 70 Years

Astronomical instrumentation has undergone tremendous development over the past 70 years, thanks to which we now have a much better understanding of the universe. This lecture by Prof. em. Dr. Hans Martin Schmid, ETHZ, provides an overview of how optical telescopes have evolved since 1955—specifically, since the construction of the 5-meter telescope on Mount Palomar. This event is organized by the Astronomical Society Bern (AGBE).

Astronomy on Tap – Big Stars in Stellar Cities

Explore how giant stars live fast and leave their mark in the Universe's busiest neighborhoods. Big stars rarely live alone. Many of them are born, evolve, and die in dense stellar environments – these "stellar cities" are some of the most fascinating places in the Universe. We're excited to welcome two outstanding experts who will guide us through this cosmic metropolis: Corinne Charbonnel (University of Geneva/CNRS France) and Mark Gieles (University of Barcelona).

Interfinity Festival 2026: Exoplanets – with the Basel Symphony Orchestra

The Interfinity Festival 2026 is dedicated to exoplanets and the cosmos – in close collaboration with the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) PlanetS, which the University of Bern leads. This is the Swiss premiere of Exoplanets, a new work by Robert Laidlow, performed by the Sinfonieorchester Basel in the vast, empty Messehalle 1. Established by the Swiss National Science Foundation in June 2014, the NCCR PlanetS brings together researchers from the Universities of Berne (Leading House), Geneva (co-Leading House), and Zürich as well as of the ETH Zürich.

Astronomy on Tap – Resolving Conflicts in Space

Space is getting crowded fast: more satellites, more actors, more dependence on orbital infrastructure. That makes coordination harder and raises new risks, from accidental collisions to political and legal disputes. So what does "conflict" in space actually look like, and what tools do we have to prevent and manage it? We're excited to welcome three experts bringing science, operations, and law together: Susanne Wampfler (CSH), Ludovic Monnerat (Swiss Armed Forces) and Merve Erdem Burger (Swiss Space Law Forum).
